Hold That Thought

Time tips our hand

But the mind can right this mess

This week I've been up in Scotland, helping a friend move from Dundee to Dubai. Away from my desk and very much in the world of big errands, I've been thinking about how we make it all fit, especially while we are aware of the ticking clock. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking:

  1. As you go through the motions, you may be visited by various thought gremlins. Podcast Consultant Mark Steadman and I discuss ways to tame them on a recent episode of List Envy
  2. “…your capacity is not a box packing problem where you must allocate every single minute of your day. This is an anti-pattern” — Engineering Manager James Stanier on managing your capacity, not your time
  3. “The motivation here is not to live like a monk, devoid of modern entertainment, but to choose the things we pay attention to” — Author & Entrepreneur Scott H. Young, on trying to do too much

Extra thoughts…

Moving is filled with tough choices…do I keep this? Where does it go? This bag or that one? But then there's a point where the ticking clock overtakes the careful consideration of things and you start frantically chucking stuff in boxes. In this way, time tips our hand.

For those with a minute spare, this week's unthinking link gives us some ridiculous choices to make, from dilemmarama on Instagram.
