Hold That Thought

From high-tech to high-touch

“To awaken the senses is, ultimately, to reconnect with the soul of the world.”

— Marie Dollé in Reclaiming our Senses

Last week I was thinking about embodied cognition — the relationship between thinking and the body. This week I'm taking that even further afield and exploring thinking and the wider environment. Here are three things on that theme to turn overthinking into expert thinking:

  1. “By embracing digital technology more mindfully—gently and with a lighter touch—we open ourselves to experiences that resonate with our senses, grounding us in both the world and ourselves.”reclaiming our senses in a digital world by Marie Dollé on Substack
  2. A survey of findings about how we think and act in winter by Michael Varnum and Ian Hohm in The Conversation
  3. What do we do now? An 11-minute minisode from Zoe Edwards of Check Your Thread, with ways to be more mindful of how we move around our world — I promise you there are things on this list you hadn't considered!

This week's underthinking link comes from the article above about reclaiming our senses:

“Another example is the immersive installation Field of Light, created by Bruce Munro. More than 50,000 illuminated stems, planted outdoors, respond to the movements of visitors and changes in weather. Every step, every gust of wind alters the installation, forcing the viewer to reconnect with the environment and the material world. Here, the digital becomes a bridge to nature, reawakening our attention to what is tangible, to what surrounds us.”

Extra thoughts…

Thank you to everyone who sent well wishes or otherwise had me in your thoughts as I recover from my hip injury. Things are improving, but with no thanks to a nasty cold (if you want proof that everything is connected, try coughing while keeping your hip perfectly still).

While these links are mostly focused on the shift into winter, it's really about how we adapt to any changing environment. So whether it's colder, darker, noisier, or more cramped where you are — or the opposite! — this week I invite you to reflect on how that broader context is shaping your thoughts. And if you feel like sharing what you've noticed about that, I'd love to hear!

Be well,
Kim

PS. It's that time again (I share this long-read reminder every year): Heat people, not places from Low-Tech magazine, powered by solar

For any task, project, or job, there are three ways you can go…

  • DIY – where you gather the stuff you need and do the work yourself
  • Do it with you – where you find a collaborator and do the work together
  • Do it for you – where you hire an expert to do the work for you

I've set up my own work so that I offer all three approaches…whether you want to work alone, together, or just sit back and see it get done, I can help.

And if you're not sure what you want, or whether we might be a good fit, let's hop on a call and figure it out

Even if we don't collaborate beyond our chat, you'll leave with a clearer idea about your next steps — that's what I can't help doing. So, please get in touch! (Or send somebody who should my way.)

If you know somebody who might get value from this newsletter, why not share with them? Forward this email to help them gain more clarity and confidence about what they're doing, too:

You can always visit the newsletter archive for all the worksheets and other free tools. Or browse podcast episodes and read the latest long-form insights. I even have a page where you can access every Medium article I've written, paywall-free

Hope you enjoy this as much as I do creating and sharing it!
