Hold That Thought

What are your options?

Published over 1 year ago • 2 min read

Every Thursday I share three useful things to help you turn overthinking into expert thinking. Here are this week’s picks:

1.

“And so we start future tripping. We imagine all possible scenarios and what they'll think when they read this email. We reread the email, we edit the email, we don't send the email. Or when we do send it, we go back and reread it. And now that we've sent it, we imagine it from their perspective, now that's out in the world. What do they think of this? Should I send a follow-up? You know, that part wasn't clear and now I've said too much. Let me take that back. I'll recall the email.”

In #18 of Unleash your Mindset, Senior UX Consultant Rizwan Javaid and I poke fun at our overthinking selves. We share our best strategies for taming thought gremlins and you'll want to stick around to the end for the listener challenge — it'll reveal what you really want.

2.

When we are in the thick of it, our focus narrows and we may fixate on the one or two most obvious options.

This can leave us feeling stuck and hopeless.

Instead of waffling, ask yourself these 5 questions:

  1. What problem am I actually solving?
  2. What are all my options?
  3. Which options are the quickest? Easiest? Most productive?
  4. What haven’t I considered yet?
  5. What sense am I making of all this?

By question five, you will be in a very different (and much more informed) place than where you started. More on how this works (Paywall-free Medium link)

3.

Previously, I shared my discovery of HALT. But do you know about WAIT? It stands for Why Am I Talking?

It can be a handy reminder when overthinking tips into over-talking.

Is there an acronym you find helpful? Reply and let me know!

What's on your… My dog Terry had ear surgery Monday and I'm having a wisdom tooth pulled Friday, so this week I've been thinking about how we all get through a tough week. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: The #1 cause of burnout is not what you think. A 6-minute pep talk from Liz Wiseman at the Big Think No, they are not mad at you. And other comforting messages from anonymous dogs When you're too tired to figure out what you need, go to your...

Deciding how to get there Possible paths by panic_attack from Getty Images In previous weeks, we'd been exploring Vision and Mission. I'm back from a brief holiday in Malta, rested and ready to help you put all of this into practice. Which means that this week, I've been thinking about Strategy and Roadmap. Here are three things on those themes to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Putting it all together…all four of my worksheets — Vision › Mission › Strategy › Roadmap — in one...

Don't pin the butterfly Photo by serikbaib from Getty Images Last week we explored developing your Vision. This week I've been thinking about what it might take to create that. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Your Mission (statement), if you choose to accept it, is the work it takes to create your Vision. I've made another worksheet to help you with exactly that. Download your editable Mission Worksheet (PDF): Clarify and develop your...
