Hold That Thought

Those pesky, invisible details

Hold That Thought

This week I've been thinking about the details. Here are three things on that theme to turn mental energy into meaningful action:

  1. “If you’re trying to do impossible things, this effect should chill you to your bones. It means you could be intellectually stuck right at this very moment, with the evidence right in front of your face and you just can’t see it.” — Fortunately, the solution is simple
  2. On the surface, it looked like I was being thorough, but underneath it was something else entirely. On obsessing over the details
  3. Here's a brief reminder about the power of changing a detail: Time Travel and Something Small

This week's underthinking link tests your ability to zero in on typographic detail. How well can you kern type?

Extra thoughts…

I'm not the biggest fan of psychometric tests, but I do like Cappfinity's Strengths Profile for its simplicity and robustness. Here's my results from two years ago; I should probably take this again soon and see what's changed.

What are your strengths and does Detail feature anywhere among them?

Also, I would love to hear your love (or loathing of) the details in general. Are they a delight to indulge in or the bane of your existence? Or a bit of both?

Here for you, macro to micro,
Kim

PS. Earlier this week, I deleted a newsletter template that I thought was not in use. Turns out, it was the one most of my past newsletters were based on. I spent the morning recreating this template, which was a practice in letting go of perfectionism while paying attention to detail. At any rate, it allowed me to simplify some things. If something doesn't look right, please let me know — I'd love to get some more anti-perfectionistic reps in.

Hope you enjoy these things as much as I do creating and sharing them!
