Hold That Thought

Set up camp

How do I push through the hard part?

This week I've been thinking about persevering, especially when it's not great. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking:

  1. “The people who race through the valley become the type of people who tell children they can’t draw.” – Designer Mike Monteiro on how to enjoy sucking at things
  2. “There’s a big gap between your skill and your vision.”Good advice for beginners from Author Georgina Bruce
(Did the paywall-free link for this article work for you? Please let me know!)

  3. I didn't know it at the time, but my initial launch of the Sense Check™ a few months back was a first pancake. I've taken your amazing feedback and improved things. It's less. And also more.

Extra thoughts…

I surfed all throughout my twenties. I really, really sucked at it. It took six months before I could even stand up properly on a board. Then I spent the rest of those beach years wiping out. I watched my friends get good and go to bigger breaks. I had terrifying moments out there that still haunt me. I broke things.

Sixteen years on and I miss surfing every day. I am lucky to live near the ocean again, but there are no waves and it's not surfable. And my health says no-go.

People rail against social media (self included), but honestly, I think this is what Instagram is for. And especially to appreciate all the things I'll never even attempt.

What hidden gems, expert craft, and generally excellent people do you follow on social media? You know them, the ones out there, doing their thing, and are simply a joy to witness…I'd love to fill my feed with more like this, please. The smaller, simpler, and sillier the better.

Lastly, for this week's unthinking link, have a go at painting with words

Kim
