Hold That Thought

Parroting and pleasing

Hold That Thought…

This week I've been thinking about people-pleasing. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking:

  1. “I’m pretty sure my life began when I became willing to disappoint people” by Isabel
  2. Don't tell me what to do; please like me! A new one by me about the two faces hiding behind all our social interactions.
  3. “Moderate emotional discomfort is a signal that you’re developing as a person, and it often happens before you can detect the benefits of self-growth.”Get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable by Ayelet Fishbach

Extra thoughts…

For this week's less thought-intensive link, here's 2024 in your pocket – a nifty single page printable calendar from Neatnik

I realise I'm sharing this in month four of the year. But, as Sarah Longfield points out in her monthly musings, maybe it would be better if the year started about now; if we moved our New Year's Resolutions to springtime? What do you think?

For any task, project, or job, there are three ways you can go…

  • DIY – where you gather the stuff you need and do the work yourself
  • Do it with you – where you find a collaborator and do the work together
  • Do it for you – where you hire an expert to do the work for you

I've set up my own work so that I offer all three approaches…whether you want to work alone, together, or just sit back and see it get done, I can help.

And if you're not sure what you want, or whether we might be a good fit, you should definitely pop on a call with me.

Even if we don't collaborate beyond our chat, you'll leave with a clearer idea about your next steps — that's what I can't help but doing. So, please get in touch! (Or send somebody who should my way.)

If you know somebody who might get value from this newsletter, why not share with them? Forward this email to help them gain more clarity and confidence about what they're doing, too:

You can always visit the newsletter archive for all the worksheets and other free tools. Or browse podcast episodes and read the latest long-form insights. I even have a page where you can access every Medium article I've written, paywall-free

Hope you enjoy this as much as I do creating and sharing it!

Don't pin the butterfly Photo by serikbaib from Getty Images Last week we explored developing your Vision. This week I've been thinking about what it might take to create that. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Your Mission (statement), if you choose to accept it, is the work it takes to create your Vision. I've made another worksheet to help you with exactly that. Download your editable Mission Worksheet (PDF): Clarify and develop your...

Yet. Retro red car with luggage by Michal Collection This week I've been thinking about creating a vision (and how we get there). Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: Start creating a vision of the world you want. My updated and expanded free worksheet comes with simple instructions, an example to guide you, and five common pitfalls to avoid. Creating your vision matters because “…the more clearly you know how you want to spend your days, the...

Spider-like, bee-like, river-like… Cobweb by sergiimostovyi This week I've been thinking about what happens when you do something different. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: What happens when you admit what is obvious – how Every's Dan Shipper discovered he was more of a writer than a founder. What happens when you hold your tongue – it took over ten years and 6000 miles to temper the cultural tendencies of my upbringing, and I found some...
