Hold That Thought

How we start

When every step of your journey rewards your choice…

This week I've been thinking about how we get started. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking:

  1. “If you want meaningful, transformative relationships with people, then you need to care about setting things up with attention to the details that matter.” – me, on how I create great experiences, from the very start. This is my entire onboarding process, laid bare — borrow what you like to make things better for the people you serve
  2. “Before I leaned into the looseness, the moments I cherished looked quite different.” – Calvin Rosser and his case for being less serious
  3. David Epstein on why you should pour out lesser ideas to get great ones

Extra thoughts…

“The day you teach the child the name of the bird, the child will never see that bird again.” — philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, quoted in the article on seriousness above.

This week's picks offer three different perspectives on getting started. Mine is quite practical, Calvin's looks at how a hard start at life is shaping his outlook on the rest, and David's is focused on the conditions for creativity.

I'd love to hear what you found most interesting right now, if you feel like sharing.

Kim

PS. “Happiness is that feeling you get right before you need more happiness” – Don Draper. I'm currently doing a rewatch of Mad Men and so far, it holds up. Particularly the writing. What have you revisited lately? What do you make of it now?
