Hold That Thought

I’m back. Thanks for holding (that thought)

“Hold that thought…until the fall.” — me, in the summer

Hello Reader!

It’s the fall (autumn, from where I’m sitting). Thank you for holding that thought.

I told you that you’d get nothing from me until at least September. It’s now late October, so I’m a little later than promised.

One of my favourite questions for people who don’t do the thing they meant to do is: What did you do instead?

It’s always telling what we actually choose. So here’s my answer:

  • Claire Pedrick and I finished Lens Not Label, and now it’s a real book. We wrote it for managers, leaders and coaches who want to work more effectively with neurodivergent people. It launches Monday 16th of November, we're throwing a launch party, and you're invited, Reader
  • We finished the first draft of Uncontained. That’s the companion book for neurodivergent coaches. It's already being received extremely well, and with 20+ beta readers sending back 1,210 reactions and comments, we moved the launch to Thursday 21 January to do all that feedback justice.
  • I kept coaching, which is still at the top of my priority list. And I keep making it simpler. I have a few spaces for 1:1 coaching this winter. If something is on your mind, reply here and I’ll offer some free spot-coaching over email. That’ll move it forward the next little bit. No need to take it further unless it makes sense to.

What stays and what changes:

Hold That Thought stays what it was: three finds on a theme, every other Thursday, to help you turn overthinking into forward thinking (plus an underthinking link and some extra thoughts). What’s new is a little more on what I’m working on. So, without further ado:

This week's theme is on starting again:

This week’s underthinking link is your name, spelled out in Landsat, from NASA. Thinking score: 3/10. One of the few times I prefer Kimberly over Kim.

Extra Thoughts…

I am thrilled to be writing to you through this newsletter again. I've been thinking about it for months. I even had this grand idea that I would use the same picture of the vines over artificial grass from my last post.

I almost scrapped the idea, because the two pics didn't look very different. Until I noticed something. Which I only spotted because of the need to make the text stand out better against the withering vines. Wait, what?

That's right, what's changed between then and now wasn't the colour of the leaves or even the light. It's that you can no longer see the artificial grass, lurking just underneath the barely living, breathing bits.

And that's a pretty apt metaphor for the state of the online world right now. The artificial bit is still there, but it's less visible, more integrated, even while the human layer becomes more sparse and spread out, withering.

Spooky.

And while even subtle change can be scary, it just makes me want to double-down on what I'm doing: helping myself and others see things clearly. What's real. That the light isn't the sun (bonus link for you).

So, as we get started again (whatever that means to you), here are some prompts to help you keep your perspective:

  • What's still true?
  • What did you do instead of the thing you meant to do?
  • What would starting again look like if it were a little lighter?

Back and a little lighter,
Kim
PS. I really do hope you'll join us for the book launch party!

If you're not getting heard in your organisation, or you want to support others to feel heard too, we wrote Lens Not Label to help you with exactly that.

Out this November, Lens Not Label is a conversational guide for managers, leaders and coaches for working more effectively with neurodivergent thinkers. Pre-order now to ensure it's in your hot hands this autumn.

If you're a neurodivergent coach, our companion book, Uncontained, is for you. Available 21st of January, 2027.

Get updates on both books, plus practical tips for better conversations with all kinds of thinkers at lensnotlabel.com
