Hold That Thought

Goals are boring and overrated

Do quests instead!

This week I've been thinking about ditching my goals. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking:

  1. “You expect a quest to take you into a new and unfamiliar landscape. You expect there to be puzzles, surprises, perils, and curious encounters. A bridge you counted on will be out. You’ll meet an interesting stranger on the path. You’ll hear wolves howling at night. This is all part of the fun. The goal mentality frames this stuff as setbacks, problems, pains – stuff in the way of the goal.” — This and other reasons from David Cain at Raptitude on why you should ditch your goals and go on quests instead
  2. Achieve your goals Complete your quests with less grinding — by Michael Ashcroft at Every
  3. A short reflection from me on a lifetime of playing games and getting stuck

Extra thoughts…

This week's unthinking link is not entirely mindless, as you'll be rehearsing the alphabet quite a bit to guess the word of the day: alphaguess

(If you want a hint, I've hidden today's answer somewhere in this email.)

What kind of quest are you currently on? I'd love to hear…and help!

Kim

For any quest, there are three ways you can go…

  • Solo adventuring, where you gather your supplies and go it alone
  • Guided questing – where you find a collaborator and adventure together
  • Hired questing – where you enlist an expert to do your bidding

I've set up my own gameplay so that I offer all three approaches…whether you want to go solo, in a party, or just sit back and reap the rewards, I can help!

And if you're not sure what kind of adventure you're on, let's discover together
