Hold That Thought

Forget passion, do this instead. Hold That Thought!

Every Thursday I share three useful things to help you turn overthinking into expert thinking. Here are this week’s picks:

1.

A Desire Path is an unplanned trail created by people or other animals traveling the easiest journey between two places. They’re emergent shortcuts that circumvent deliberately planned routes, which are often longer and less direct. Once a desire path has been minimally established, others often follow suit.

Forget your passion, follow your Desire Path

(or, How my clients and I find the through-line in in our seemingly wild and uncultivated career paths as a multi-passionate creatives)

2.

Drawing 170,000 circles, the value of doing things repeatedly, and what even is productivity? — 4-minute YouTube from John Green of the vlogbrothers (and the Anthropocene Reviewed)

3.

As we head into an energy-challenged winter, I'm reminded of this long read from Low Tech Magazine that explores various approaches people have taken over the ages to stay warm: Heating people, not places

Here's a short version in comic form from Sketchplanations:

Being uncomfortable creates a form of sensory noise — a distraction in our work environment. I've written previously about visual noise and I'd love to expand on this concept in other ways in future writing. What sorts of “noise” do you encounter in your work space?

Also, are there any topics or challenges you'd like to see explored here in the newsletter? Reply and let me know!

Stay safe and warm,

Kim

I could look across the room and say, “I see that chair you're sitting in. It looks like it needs better support at the front.” But that's not my job as a coach. My job is to help you see for yourself what needs doing.

I help you lift the burden and gain new perspective. I support and guide your thinking, so that you can see what's really going on with your situation. You decide what you want to do about it, and I am there to advance your thinking even further.

Let’s pull up our chairs and start thinking together

What's on your… My dog Terry had ear surgery Monday and I'm having a wisdom tooth pulled Friday, so this week I've been thinking about how we all get through a tough week. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: The #1 cause of burnout is not what you think. A 6-minute pep talk from Liz Wiseman at the Big Think No, they are not mad at you. And other comforting messages from anonymous dogs When you're too tired to figure out what you need, go to your...

Deciding how to get there Possible paths by panic_attack from Getty Images In previous weeks, we'd been exploring Vision and Mission. I'm back from a brief holiday in Malta, rested and ready to help you put all of this into practice. Which means that this week, I've been thinking about Strategy and Roadmap. Here are three things on those themes to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Putting it all together…all four of my worksheets — Vision › Mission › Strategy › Roadmap — in one...

Don't pin the butterfly Photo by serikbaib from Getty Images Last week we explored developing your Vision. This week I've been thinking about what it might take to create that. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Your Mission (statement), if you choose to accept it, is the work it takes to create your Vision. I've made another worksheet to help you with exactly that. Download your editable Mission Worksheet (PDF): Clarify and develop your...
