Hold That Thought

Enough with goals

Say when…

Hello! I'm excited to be back in touch with you again. Today's newsletter is a bit longer than usual, but I hope what I'm sharing here eases some inbox overwhelm (and doesn't add to it).

This week I've been thinking about creating and enoughness. Here are three things on that theme to turn overthinking into expert thinking:

  1. Consumption says, “Drink now, there may not be enough later”. Creation says, “There will always be enough”. — Thoughts on my no-buy year and creation over consumption
  2. Artists and startup founders aren't that different. And five other learnings from working at an art gallery by Henrik Karlsson
  3. “When I find myself dwelling on the past or the future, it’s always because I think I need to do something to feel like I’m enough.”Enoughness is here by David Spinks

Extra thoughts…

I didn't drink in 2023, I didn't buy clothes in 2024, and this year I'm contemplating not having goals. At least not HARD goals. Or even SMART ones. There may be some space for quests, we'll see.

There are things I want to achieve, but I'm finding the pressure and rigidity of goals overwhelming. Same for reflections – I didn't even finish my YearCompass this time around, and that's fine. I'm finding most labels a bit much, too. They've been useful, to a point. Do I need them still? Possibly. Do they need to be front and center? Probably not.

All these thoughts are going into the slow cooker. More later.

In the meantime, the free speed coaching pop-up shop will be open again soon! Please stick around for the newsletter announcement on that. Also, forward this email to your friends and colleagues so that they may get in on this opportunity to get unstuck on something, too.

What are your thoughts about creation, consumption, goals, and labels? Is it all a bit much? Want things to be a bit simpler? Maybe I can help!

Happy making, doing, being,
Kim

PS. If you want to follow more of what my brain is up to, last year I started a Substack sharing interesting links I've read throughout the week (things that don't quite fit here). It's mostly things I find on tech, culture, and communication and it's definitely a work in progress: Learning from what doesn't work – Interesting links from week 52 in 2024

If you know somebody who might get value from this newsletter, why not share with them? Forward this email to help them gain more clarity and confidence about what they're doing, too:

You can always visit the newsletter archive for all the worksheets and other free tools. Or browse podcast episodes and read the latest long-form insights. I even have a page where you can access every Medium article I've written, paywall-free

Hope you enjoy this as much as I do creating and sharing it!
