Hold That Thought

And if it worked? Hold That Thought!

Every Thursday I share three useful things to help you turn overthinking into expert thinking. Here are this week’s picks:

1.

Why you care what other people think of you — a long read by Tim Urban about taming your Social Survival Mammoth. Well worth the read, but if you're short on time, these are the three core steps:

  1. Examine yourself by getting to know your Authentic Voice, finding out where your mammoth is hiding, and deciding where it needs to be ousted
  2. Gather courage: recognise that the mammoth has a low IQ, its fears are irrational, and its efforts are counterproductive
  3. Start being yourself: with your more manageable mammoth, you can banish any Puppet Masters in your life and use that Authentic Voice you befriended in Step 1.

2.

Most people think they need a productivity system or an app. The truth is, they need to manage their feelings about their work. By starting to notice what those feelings are you'll be well on your way to getting more done (and feeling great about it).

This LinkedIn post by Liz Fosslien sums it up well:

3.

When I was a new coach, I was keen to learn all the “best” questions to help my clients. Now I know through experience why that’s an unproductive approach. However, there is one question that stands out as exceptionally useful in a variety of situations. It’s worth knowing about, for helping yourself and others move anything forward

And if you didn't overthink it?

Did you find that first link to be a delightful trifecta of metaphor, evolutionary science, and self-improvement as much as I did?

Do you want to do this work together? If so, let's chat!

I'm ready to work with 3 new thinkers. Are you READY?

When I share an article I've written on Medium, I use a 'friend link' so you can view it without using one of your 3 free monthly reads.

If you've been thinking of joining Medium, why not do it now? You’ll get access to every article, plus your subscription fee supports me directly and thousands of other writers, too.

I would love to see you there!

What's on your… My dog Terry had ear surgery Monday and I'm having a wisdom tooth pulled Friday, so this week I've been thinking about how we all get through a tough week. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: The #1 cause of burnout is not what you think. A 6-minute pep talk from Liz Wiseman at the Big Think No, they are not mad at you. And other comforting messages from anonymous dogs When you're too tired to figure out what you need, go to your...

Deciding how to get there Possible paths by panic_attack from Getty Images In previous weeks, we'd been exploring Vision and Mission. I'm back from a brief holiday in Malta, rested and ready to help you put all of this into practice. Which means that this week, I've been thinking about Strategy and Roadmap. Here are three things on those themes to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Putting it all together…all four of my worksheets — Vision › Mission › Strategy › Roadmap — in one...

Don't pin the butterfly Photo by serikbaib from Getty Images Last week we explored developing your Vision. This week I've been thinking about what it might take to create that. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Your Mission (statement), if you choose to accept it, is the work it takes to create your Vision. I've made another worksheet to help you with exactly that. Download your editable Mission Worksheet (PDF): Clarify and develop your...
