Hold That Thought

An overthinking horrorshow — Hold That Thought!

Published over 1 year ago • 1 min read

Every Thursday I share three useful things to help you turn your overthinking into expert thinking.

I thought about this a lot, and decided that week’s picks will be a bit different…they're all unfinished in some way.

Doing this is a reminder to myself and to others that you are not failing, you are successfully iterating.

Without further ‘do’, here are three things of value, all in progress:

1.

I made a 5-minute video about strengths. It has no subtitles, no editing, and no images yet. It's worth sharing now because I believe in this work immensely and I want to get the message out there. Watch the video and get started with Strengths

2.

“By eliciting fear in a safe setting, horror fiction presents an opportunity for audiences to hone their emotion regulation skills” — from Pandemic Practice by Scrivner et al., 2021.

Turns out, I've been practicing so much these past several years that I was more than capable of making an overthinker's guide to horror films — great for those who don't like or understand the genre…yet.

The list itself is complete, but the links and descriptions will be filled in further as this spooky month unfolds:

3.

This is the challenge with themes…to be consistent, you gotta stick to them. I struggled against time and the unexpected in my search for an unfinished creative work to round out this newsletter, so I leave you with this wise old gem instead:

Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good (enough)
— Voltaire, Aristotle, Pareto, and many others (Wikipedia)

(un)concluding thought…

From La Sagrada Família to the International Space Station, some work is never done.

And that's ok!

If this week were its own self-contained universe, what would be your unfinished masterpiece? Reply and let me know. Or recommend a thought-provoking film.

What's on your… My dog Terry had ear surgery Monday and I'm having a wisdom tooth pulled Friday, so this week I've been thinking about how we all get through a tough week. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: The #1 cause of burnout is not what you think. A 6-minute pep talk from Liz Wiseman at the Big Think No, they are not mad at you. And other comforting messages from anonymous dogs When you're too tired to figure out what you need, go to your...

Deciding how to get there Possible paths by panic_attack from Getty Images In previous weeks, we'd been exploring Vision and Mission. I'm back from a brief holiday in Malta, rested and ready to help you put all of this into practice. Which means that this week, I've been thinking about Strategy and Roadmap. Here are three things on those themes to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Putting it all together…all four of my worksheets — Vision › Mission › Strategy › Roadmap — in one...

Don't pin the butterfly Photo by serikbaib from Getty Images Last week we explored developing your Vision. This week I've been thinking about what it might take to create that. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Your Mission (statement), if you choose to accept it, is the work it takes to create your Vision. I've made another worksheet to help you with exactly that. Download your editable Mission Worksheet (PDF): Clarify and develop your...
