Almost eaten by the bear — Hold That Thought

Every Thursday I share three useful links to help you turn your overthinking into expert thinking. Here are this week’s picks:

  1. This is the part where… you click for two storytelling concepts that help you make sense of challenging situations — from my first blog post at witten.kim/blog, recently shortened and updated
  2. The first draft is always perfect – from sketchplanations
  3. The minimum viable backstory is a neat concept to help us when we might be overthinking (and over-verbalizing) our stories:

All this exploration of story reminds me of a narrative class I took in grad school. We spend weeks studying the prize-winning short story “The Dinosaur” by Augusto Monterroso. It goes:

Cuando despertó, el dinosaurio todavía estaba allí.

(When he woke up, the dinosaur was still there.)

That's it. That's the story. It has all the necessary parts. And now you can say you've read a short story from Spanish literature, too.

What is your story? Share your 1-2 sentence pitch, Twitter bio or tagline. I'll reply and offer something to help you improve it in a small, meaningful way.

What's on your… My dog Terry had ear surgery Monday and I'm having a wisdom tooth pulled Friday, so this week I've been thinking about how we all get through a tough week. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: The #1 cause of burnout is not what you think. A 6-minute pep talk from Liz Wiseman at the Big Think No, they are not mad at you. And other comforting messages from anonymous dogs When you're too tired to figure out what you need, go to your...

Deciding how to get there Possible paths by panic_attack from Getty Images In previous weeks, we'd been exploring Vision and Mission. I'm back from a brief holiday in Malta, rested and ready to help you put all of this into practice. Which means that this week, I've been thinking about Strategy and Roadmap. Here are three things on those themes to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Putting it all together…all four of my worksheets — Vision › Mission › Strategy › Roadmap — in one...

Don't pin the butterfly Photo by serikbaib from Getty Images Last week we explored developing your Vision. This week I've been thinking about what it might take to create that. Here are three things on that theme to help turn overthinking into expert thinking: 1. Your Mission (statement), if you choose to accept it, is the work it takes to create your Vision. I've made another worksheet to help you with exactly that. Download your editable Mission Worksheet (PDF): Clarify and develop your...
